Remember When....

Since I just started school. I plan to be a school teacher. I was a talking to a guy at work who use to work here who is now a school teacher at an urban middle school here in Charlotte. He was telling me about the woes of teaching and how spoiled ungrateful and BAD these kids are TODAY. After having this conversation I was inspired to post this blog. My husband sent me this email touching on this subject a few weeks ago. It is so funny I thought it would be nice to share it with my readers.

FOR THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!

If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious. When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what, with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill BOTH ways yadda, yadda, yadda! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!! There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter...with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! There were no MP3's or Napster's! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitch hike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! We didn't have fancy crap like Call waiting!

If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances mister! We didn't have any fancy Sony Play Station video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids' and the graphics sucked! Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win.

The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE! When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed! Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no on screen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little bastards! And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire ... imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about!

You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980! Oh yea, and a seat belt was Mom throwing her arm across your chest every time she hit the brakes.

Im not over 30 but I hear my family say similar things like that all the time. But i do remember when everyone use to line up at the payphone because someone paged them and the person in front of you is cupcaking like they're on their house phone. I also remeber when there was a rumor that crack heads was putting HV infected needles in the change slot. I stop using payphones after that. And to think about the germs YUK.

Thanks for the back in the day blog. Yes i remember it all, from the rotary phone to the not having cable TV. Also remember when you were not allowed to get phone calls after a certain hours, and you had to come in the house when the street lights came on (and moms would stand at the door calling your entire government name) and telling you, "dont't let me call your name again. Families were a lot closer then, because we had to communicate.. Have dinner was a mandate. Manners were like drinking water. wordaholic thanks for the flash back! I can ever remember have to listen to music on a 8track tape, or reel to reel.. no such thing as cassette, dvd, or mp3/ipod.. Moms used to say the we were at times ungrateful because we did not appreciate what we had. This blog has made really appreciate the old school and the new school.. Technology today forces you to be much more discipline.

To Kiya...Thanks for the comment I remember the phone booth when people waited in line to use it. Don't remember the crack head infected needles but if I did I would'nt use the phone booth either. Again thanks for stoping by and showing me some love. I will be sure to check out your blog.

To Anonymous....Thanks for the love. I remember all those things like coming inside before the street lights go off and having Dinner with the family. Oh where have those times gone!...I miss those days!...I pary they will come back. Kids today need it.

You're right. We are spoiled.
When I read your post I couldnt help but to think back to when we use to tape songs off the radio to make our own mixtape and you had to sit next to the radio with your finger on the stop botton because if the DJ start talking you'll be heated, 'cause now you have to rewind to the right spot to record over it.
And when your boo gave you a mixtape with love songs, it wasthe best gift ever..

OH hell yea Crys C I remember it all....U just made me remember about recording on cassette tape. U had to stop it at just the right time so it would'nt record over another song. WOW....Those were the good ol days!...

I also remember when the boy in school who liked you actually walked u home from school with your books in his hand. or sometimes he would carry your bookbag and his.

wow making mix tapes off the radio, thats going back.. reminds of how bad the bootleg movies used to be people standing up.. :) we respected a lot more back in the day, when an adult said something to you, you knew not to talk back. Its up to us 30 and older to bring back those days to our children, and adults that we know who appreciated the 70's 80's era. Not by the things that we say, but our actions. Speaking of making love songs crys, its amazing how those loves songs from back in the day meant something, so much so we still reach back and play the back in the day songs.. Wordaholic this blog takes you back.. Keep flowing with words...

@Wordaholic: LOL I remember that. But in my case, homeboy would have to give me back my book bag from 2 blocks away from my house and he had to cross the street. ‘Cause if my parents would’ve saw some boy walking me home from school and he had my book bag, I would’ve got my ass whopped.

LOL... Anonymous, you're not lying. Those bootlegs were ridiculous. People laughing, standing in front of the guy with the camcorder, and if it was a hood movie theater you might hear an argument.
I was too young then to really listen to the love songs. But when I do hear them again, I realize they did have a lot of meaning. Good music lives on forever (not like these songs that are out now).

Wish the day would come back again.

crys.c: you brought back some memories on how if you were seeing anyone and if they had chance to come meet mom and the family, they drilled you with questions wanting to know who were your parents were did you come from, what kind of jobs did your parents have. My point is that families care back in the day as well.

Thanks to all for my extended memory down memory lane.

Peace and Love.

The youth of today are definitely spoiled and ungrateful. Sadly, that will probably be their downfall. They will have to learn the hard way.

You are right about The Internet. We barely had cable TV. Nowadays, these kids have like 300 channels. LOL. I remember the days of taping songs, and hoping the deejay played the entire song. And hope the deejay's voice wasn't included.

Call Waiting, yep.

Do you remember having to take the video game out and blow the dust out of it? LOL.

No remote, yep. Good one.

No microwave. Another good one.

Can you believe the Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince was the first album I ever bought? I remember I would rap over the instrumental side.

The good ol' days.

Great post. Enjoyed the read.
